Bleaching earth, also known by many names such as Bleaching clay, activated clay, bleaching powder, Bentonite earth, … is a kind of mineral clay with swelling, high viscosity.

The two types of commercial bleaching clays used in processing edible oils may be characterized as: Natural Bleaching Earth and Activated Bleaching Earth. Natural Bleaching Earth is usually a bentonite clay which exhibits adsorptive properties in its natural state.

Bleaching earths (activated bleaching earths, bleaching clay or activated Fuller´s earth) are used for refining of edible oils (e.g. raps oil), fats, waxes and mineral oils (production of lubricants). These materials can also be used for reclamation (re-refining) of spent oils.

Key end-users widely utilize activated bleaching earth for refining, purification, and discoloration of the oils. An increase in the production of oil-producing crops due to the use of advanced technologies and growth in a cultivated area of these crops are other major factors responsible for segment growth. The mineral oil and lubricants application segment falls closely behind and will have a moderate growth rate over the forecast period.

The activated bleaching earth is utilized for its absorbent properties for refining and discoloration of the mineral oils and lubricants. It is widely used in refineries and processing plants across the globe. Another major reason driving this application segment is the product utilization in the recycling of waste lubricants. Reprocessing and recycling of waste lubricants are crucial and are encouraged as it is environmentally sustainable. The other applications segment includes product usage in effluent treatment plants as well as in the cosmetic industry. As the research is advancing, the end-use product portfolio of activated bleaching earth is also increasing, which will contribute significantly to the market growth.
